10th March 2024 - the 92nd birth anniversary of the exceptional and visionary space scientist, Padma Vibhushan Professor U R Rao, who was the Former Chairman of ISRO for more than a decade and Chairman of KSTA for 12 years. Fondly known as the father of satellite technology in India, Prof. Rao's indomitable spirit and brilliance paved the way for the successful development and launch of the very first indigenously built satellite, ARYBHATA on 19th April 1975. His immense contribution to Indian space mission is widely acknowledged.
With unwavering expertise, Prof. Rao provided meticulous guidance to numerous Indian space missions throughout his tenure as the Chairman of the Advisory Committee of Space Sciences (ADCOS) at ISRO, spanning over three remarkable decades. In addition, he also served as the Chairman of the Physical Research Lab (PRL) Council, which is known as the cradle of space technology in India. His invaluable guidance for the ADITYA mission, in particular, was fondly rememberef by the Mission Director as it played a pivotal role in its successful launch.
However, the extent of Prof. Rao's contributions extends far beyond the realm of space technology. He lent his wisdom and counsel to diverse fields such as astronomy, ocean science, atmospheric science, Antarctic studies, and even RBI, Prasar Bharathi. Under his visionary leadership, KSTA flourished, and myriad science educational and outreach programs were initiated, leaving an indelible impact on generations to come.He was bestowed upon with numerous awards and accolades, including Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan and more than 25 honorary doctorates Indian and foreign universities. It is a matter of pride to sate that he is the only Indian space scientist to be inducted into the very prestigious "Satellite Hall of Fame" and "IAF Hall of Fame.
On his birth anniversary, we have the utmost privilege and honor to pay heartfelt tribute to this extraordinary soul with profound reverence. It fills me with immense gratitude to reflect upon the fortuitous opportunity I had to work under the exceptional leadership of Prof. U R Rao during his esteemed Chairmanship at KSTA.
